The oldest U.S. Army fort in continuous operation west of the Mississippi, Fort Leavenworth was built along the Missouri River in 1827 as a frontier post to protect immigrant Indian tribes and white traders. It played critical roles during the Mexicans and Civil Wars and early expansion of the West, and today this historic post is home to the prestigious U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.
