Everyone has a story. Mine began in the Peace River Country of Alberta, Canada, where my brother Dave and I were born to Betty (Elizabeth Mary Childers) and Dan Comm. Dan was not interested in a permanent relationship. I have no memories of him.
I do recall living with Mom and Dave in an apartment in Grande Prairie, on Uncle Ray and Aunt Elsie Emerson’s farm and eventually me with Grandma Daisy on “Pete” Pedersen’s farm near Eaglesham.
In 1951 we journeyed by train to Cody, Nebraska to visit Uncle Bob and Aunt Maribeth Childers. C. Stanley Soper was their mailman and as they say “the rest is history.” He and Mom were married in December 1952. He gave all of us his love and his name.
Growing up in the village of Cody in the 50’s and 60’s was a true blessing.
I met Doug Milburn at Chadron State College in 1966. We were married in 1967, and settled in Rushville where our children were born and raised.
Jolana Lynn is married to John Varga. She has one daughter- Kodi Lynn.
Jefferey Douglas married his high school sweetheart, Lisa Fisher, and they blessed us with Jay Douglas, Andrew “Drew” David, and Aubrey Jo.
All these people, places and times give me a rich source of material. The stories started with a Facebook blog on Grandma Daisy’s birthday. Writing became a catharsis for me after Brother Dave’s untimely death.
I hope others will share their stories— sweet or bittersweet— we all have one to tell.
