Sunshine. Sun. Summer Poems and Quotes (June 2019)

Susan's Thursday morning note June 27, 2019
Sun.  Summer. Sunshine. Poems & Quotes

Good morning!  Perfect coffee.  Deep shadows with bright sunlight surrounding them.   Pretending I’m in an Austrian cafe surrounded by danishes of my choice.   Birds on tune & off-tune singing their hears out for me.  Life.  Time.  A gift we’ve been given again today.  Early morning.  Summer sunlight through the spider-webs.  How much of my life I’ve missed this beautiful gift available to open every single day of my life, but rarely claimed.   Summer sunlight over the shoulder of my morning angel peering through the edge of the closed curtains.  Encouraging me to open up this day – to welcome the unknown.  To hear the early song of my little birds.

Why I Wake Early by Mary Oliver

Hello, sun in my face.
Hello, you who made the morning
and spread it over the fields
and into the faces of the tulips
and the nodding morning glories,
and into the windows of, even, the
miserable and the crotchety -

best preacher that ever was,
dear star, that just happens
to be where you are in the universe
to keep us from ever-darkness,
to ease us with warm touching,
to hold us in the great hands of light -
good morning, good morning, good morning.

Watch, now, how I start the day
in happiness, in kindness.

Below I’ve tried to find other favorite poems and quotes on sunshine and summer.  The beating, relentless shine during afternoon hours is accepted because of the generous gift handed when greeting me in the morning!

The Rising Sun by Sri Chinmoy

The rising sun
Blesses my mind
With joy.
The setting sun
Blesses my heart
With peace.

Summer Sun by Robert Louis Stevenson

Great is the sun, and wide he goes
Through empty heaven with repose;
And in the blue and glowing days
More thick than rain he showers his rays.

Though closer still the blinds we pull
To keep the shady parlour cool,
Yet he will find a chink or two
To slip his golden fingers through.

The dusty attic spider-clad
He, through the keyhole, maketh glad;
And through the broken edge of tiles
Into the laddered hay-loft smiles.

Meantime his golden face around
He bares to all the garden ground,
And sheds a warm and glittering look
Among the ivy's inmost nook.

Above the hills, along the blue,
Round the bright air with footing true,
To please the child, to paint the rose,
The gardener of the World, he goes.

We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness.  God is the friend of silence.  See how nature – trees, flowers, grass – grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence…We need silence to be able to touch souls.   Mother Teresa

Are you upset little friend?  Have you been lying awake worrying?  Well, don’t worry…I’m here.  The flood waters will recede, the famine will end, the sun will shine tomorrow, and I will always be here to take care of you.  Charlie Brown to Snoopy

Today a new sun rises for me; everything lives, everything is animated, everything seems to speak to me of my passion, everything invites me to cherish it.  Ninon de Lenclos (1620-1705)

The windows of my soul I throw
Wide open to the sun.  John Greenleaf Whittier

A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken.  James Dent

If there is one spot of sun spilling onto the floor, a cat will find it and soak it up.  Jean Asper McIntosh

Summer afternoon – summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.  Henry James

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a waste of time.  John Lubbock

Spring flew swiftly by, and summer came; and if the village had been beautiful at first, it was now in the full glow and luxuriance of its richness. The great trees, which had looked shrunken and bare in the earlier months, had now burst into strong life and health; and stretching forth their green arms over the thirsty ground, converted open and naked spots into choice nooks, where was a deep and pleasant shade from which to look upon the wide prospect, steeped in sunshine, which lay stretched out beyond. The earth had donned her mantle of brightest green; and shed her richest perfumes abroad. It was the prime and vigour of the year; all things were glad and flourishing.  Charles Dickens, Oliver Twist

Thank you for letting me enter your Thursday morning.  Tonight we’ll have our chance to write in stone the epitaph for the moments we will use today…will we have words worthy of imprinting?   Worthy of the 86,400 seconds given to us today?  Will we look to the heavens and whisper “thank you”?  Will we look into the eyes of those we are with?  Will we mentally stop a few moments of time as it slips so quickly past?  Life.  So short.  So beautiful.  If we only remember to look to the heavens, to mentally drop to our knees, to hear the birds.  The peace that passes the understanding of anyone near us is only that moment away.  Susan
