Thoughts, quotes, hymns on angels
Good morning! The silence of the sky after the winds said goodbye. The steam from my mug. The moments to begin my day with gratefulness. Grateful to my morning angel for appearing at my door handing me her jewel of another day. I read a beautiful quote from the 1500’s on the presence of angels surrounding us. Below are poems, reflections, and different thoughts on angels from those that have lived long ago. Angels. Our messengers. Those who are with us when we take our sacred first breath with the message of welcome to this world. Those who are with us at the sacred time of our last breath with the message of welcome as they open the door to the room full of those we love in heaven.
“Make yourself familiar with the angels and behold them frequently in spirit; for without being seen, they are present with you.” Saint Francis de Sales, 1567-1622
“Angelus custos” ~ Guardian Angel (Latin)
“Angels are spirits, but it is not because they are spirits that they are angels. They become angels when they are sent. For the name angel refers to their office, not their nature. You ask the name of this nature, it is spirit; you ask its office, it is that of an Angel, which is a messenger.” Saint Augustine, Bishop North Africa (now Algeria) 354-430
“Life is so generous a giver but we, judging its gifts by their covering, cast them away as ugly or heavy or hard. Remove the covering and you will find beneath it a living splendor, woven of love, by wisdom, with power. Welcome it, grasp it, and you touch the angel’s hand that brings it to you. Everything we call a trial or a sorrow or a duty, believe me that angel’s hand is there, and the wonder of an overshadowing presence. Life is so full of meaning and purpose, so full of beauty beneath its covering that you will find earth but cloaks your heaven. Courage then to claim, that is all.” Giovanni Giocaondo, Italian Architect 1433-1515
“I saw an angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.”
Michelangelo, Italian Sculptor and Painter 1475-1564
“Peace is the first thing the angels sang.”
John Keble, English Priest and Poet 1792-1866)
Hush! my dear, lie still and slumber
Holy angels guard thy bed;
Heavenly beings without number
Gently falling on thy head.
Isaac Watts, English writer 1674-1748
“Sub ala angeli” ~ Under the wing of an angel (Latin)
“Lord, make my heart a place where angels sing!” John Keble, English Poet 1792-1866
“Everyone entrusted with a mission is an angel.”Maimonides, Rabbi and Philosopher 1138-1204
“When baby smiles in his sleep, an angel kisses him.”
Cora L.V. Scott Richmond, “Water Lily.”
“When our soul has been cast down, has never an invisible voice whispered, “There is lifting up”? Have not gales and breezes of sweet and healing thought been wafted over us, as if an angel had shaken from his wings the odors of paradise?”
Harriet Beecher Stowe 1811-1896
“Angeli tecum eant” (Latin) ~ May angels go with you.
“The flowers have spoken to me more than I can tell in written words. They are hieroglyphics of angels, loved by all men for the beauty of their character, though few can decipher even fragments of their meaning.”
Lydia Maria Child, Abolitionist 1802-1880
“Outside the open window
The morning air is all awash with angels.”
Richard Wilbur, American Poet 1921-2017
“Silently one by one, in the infinite meadows of heaven,
Blossomed the lovely stars, the forget-me-nots of angels.”
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Amerian Poet 1807-1882
“When a smile touches our hearts. When the forest stills us to peace. When music moves us to rapture. When we really love, laugh or dance with joy. We are at one with the Angels.” Dorothy Maclean, Canadian Writer 1920-2020
“Kind words are the music of the world. They have a power which seems to be beyond natural causes, as if they were some angel’s song which had lost its way and come to earth.”
Frederick William Faber, English Hymnwriter 1814-1863
“Angels transcend every religion, every philosophy, every creed. In fact, Angels have no religion as we know it…Their existence precedes every religious system that has ever existed on Earth.” Thomas Aquinas (Italian Priest, ca. 1225-1274)
“We shall find peace. We shall hear angels, we shall see the sky sparkling with diamonds.” Anton Chekhov, Russian Playwright 1860-1904)
“Music is well said to be the speech of angels.”
Thomas Carlyle, Scottish Historian 1795-1881
‘Let us affectionately love His angels as counselors and defenders appointed by the Father and placed over us. They are faithful; they are prudent; they are powerful; Let us only follow them, let us remain close to them, and in the protection of the God of heaven let us abide.” Bernard of Clairvaux, France Abbot 1090-1153
Hymn, “All Through the Night” (Welsch hymn 1784)
Sleep, my child, and peace attend thee
All through the night;
Guardian angels God will send thee
All through the night.
Soft the drowsy hours are creeping,
Hill and vale in slumber sleeping,
I my loving vigil keeping,
All through the night.
